La nascita del Barocco Leccese

Una donna che personifica la Lecce del Cinquecento, appoggiata sulla bandiera rossa con la mezza luna ottomana, a motivo della vittoria di Lepanto nel 1571, inizio di un'epoca d’oro per il Mediterraneo e per la città, incantati dal fiorire del Barocco Leccese.

Essa offre a una bambina, la Lecce del futuro, un melograno, simbolo di prosperità e ricchezza, tanto presente nelle ricche e belle decorazioni barocche.

La bambina ha lo scalpello in mano; essa siede sotto un leccio ed è protetta da una lupa, presenti nello stemma civico.

Altri elementi presenti del Barocco Leccese, sono la pigna in primo piano, simbolo di fertilità e abbondanza, e la vite, simbolo eucaristico.

La scena si svolge su una piccola altura di campagna, immersi nel paesaggio salentino, con la Lecce medievale e rinascimentale sullo sfondo, in un'atmosfera crepuscolare.

The work honors the city of Lecce, known as "the Florence of southern Ital".

A woman who personifies Lecce in 1500s, she leans on the flag of Turkey, defeated in the battle of Lepanto in 1571, and allowing the development of the golden age of the city: the Baroque Leccese.

She offers a child, which symbolizes the Lecce of the future, the pomegranate, the symbol of prosperity and wealth, icon of the rich baroque decorations.

The child who begins to sculpt the capital is protected by a she-wolf and finds shelter under an holm oak tree, symbols that identify the city.

Other symbols present in the Lecce Baroque are: the pine cone in the foreground, the symbol of fertility and abundance, and the vine, that is an Eucharistic symbol.

It all takes place in a Salento landscape, in the background we can see the city of Lecce during the 1500, in a twilight atmosphere.
